John Matthews and Mike Tuke to Climb Ben Macdui

Bilateral Knee Replacement Patient and MatOrtho® Chairman Mike Tuke Set to Climb Britain’s Second Highest Mountain in Aid of Nepal Earthquake Victims

 John Matthews and Son

John Matthews is a 71 year old physiotherapist who is still practicing in Guildford, and who retired from being physiotherapist to the All England Club in 2006 after 35 years. In 2012, after debilitating pain, he underwent two total knee replacement procedures in which he received MatOrtho’s Medial Rotation Knee™ implant (MRK™). Both operations were carried out by Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Paul Trikha (FRCS), from the Surrey Orthopaedic Clinic.

Following an excellent recovery which included long sessions of physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and exercise, and with his determined mindset, a series of personal achievements ensued.

The latest is a challenge very close to his heart. In 2005, before his arthritic knees became too uncomfortable, he with his son and friend Dr. John Blowers undertook a month long trek in Nepal to reach both North and South Base Camps of the world’s third highest mountain, Kanchenjunga. His party of sherpas (porters) was led by a sirdar named Surya Bahadur Tamang. John and Surya became great friends and he has sponsored his son’s education for the last 10 years.

In the devastating earthquake in April 2015, Surya and his family lost everything. His house ended up a pile of rubble and they now live in a shed as a makeshift home. A sum of £3500 would enable Surya to buy materials to rebuild his home so John decided to try and help him by raising some sponsorship.

On Tuesday 4th August 2015, John and his son are going to climb Ben Macdui which is Britain’s second highest mountain.  It is not a technical climb but is somewhat remote and very susceptible to the vagaries of the weather. The all round trip could take as long as 11hours.

Also tackling Ben MacDui on the 4th August is MatOrtho® Chairman Mike Tuke. Mike developed the MRK™ knee implant 22 years ago and is also a very keen walker himself. When approached by Mr Matthews for sponsorship support Mike decided he would join him and help with his sponsorship quest.

We wish all three of the climbers the very best with their hike. If you would like to sponsor John for his walk, feel free to email him at: johnsclimb@hotmail.com.
